With his first horn concerto, the merely eighteen-year-old Richard Strauss succeeded in producing a captivating masterstroke. To this day, the concerto is beloved throughout the world (not only) by horn players, and together with Mozart's masterworks numbers among the essential pieces in the instrument's repertoire. Peter Damm, former principal horn for the Staatskapelle Dresden and world-class soloist, has not only performed the concerto publicly over 170 times himself, but has also presented pivotal research findings and publications on its genesis. Prepared after reviewing all surviving sources, the Urtext edition he has edited may thus been regarded as the edition of reference. For use in lessons and for performances, the especially playable piano reduction by Johannes Umbreit is a great help.
Avec son premier concerto pour cor, et étant à peine âgé de 18 ans, Richard Strauss accomplit un coup de génie ravissant. Jusqu'à nos jours, ce concerto est apprécié dans le monde entier par les cornistes (et par d'autres), faisant partie, aux côtés des chefs-d'oeuvre de Mozart, des pièces de répertoire incontournables à l'instrument. Peter Damm, ancien cor solo de l'orchestre de la Sächsische Staatskapelle de Dresde et soliste de renommée mondiale, ne s'est pas contenté de jouer lui-même en public ce concerto plus de 170 fois, mais il a en outre présenté et publié les résultats fondamentaux de ses investigations concernant la genèse de ce concerto. Son édition Urtext prend en considération toutes les sources conservées et peut ainsi être considérée comme une édition de référence. Pour l'étude de la pièce ainsi que pour les auditions, la réduction pour piano réalisée par Johannes Umbreit et particulièrement bien jouable, s'avère d'une grande aide.
Mit seinem 1. Hornkonzert gelang dem erst 18-jährigen Richard Strauss ein hinreißender Geniestreich. Bis heute wird das Konzert auf der ganzen Welt (nicht nur) von Hornisten geliebt und zählt neben Mozarts Meisterwerken zu den unverzichtbaren Repertoirestücken für das Instrument. Peter Damm, ehemaliger Solohornist der Sächsischen Staatskapelle Dresden und Solist von Weltrang, hat das Konzert nicht nur über 170-mal selbst öffentlich aufgeführt, sondern auch grundlegende Forschungsergebnisse und Publikationen zu seiner Entstehungsgeschichte vorgelegt. Die von ihm herausgegebene Urtextausgabe, die sämtliche erhaltenen Quellen berücksichtigt, kann somit als Referenz-Edition angesehen werden. Zum Einstudieren im Unterricht und für Vorspiele ist der besonders gut spielbare Klavierauszug von Johannes Umbreit eine große Hilfe.
